WhatsApp sales attribution: which ad to double and which to switch off

How to know the same day which creative produced the sale that closed in WhatsApp — and why sending the real value back to Meta changes what the algorithm hunts for.

The sale closes in WhatsApp. The ad runs on Meta. Between the two sits a gap most operations cross by guessing.

The symptom is familiar: the ad manager reports 300 conversations, finance reports 42 sales, and nobody can say which of the 42 came from which of the 300.

Why the spreadsheet does not fix it

Manual reconciliation fails for three structural reasons, not for lack of diligence:

  1. It is monthly. By the time the data lands, the budget has already been spent on the wrong creative.
  2. It loses the middle. First click and last click tell different stories, and the spreadsheet keeps only one.
  3. It dies on referrals. A lead from a past customer or an affiliate has no UTM to copy.

Bind the source to the lead, not to the conversation

The technical difference that solves this is where the source is stored. Stored on the conversation, it disappears when the thread is archived. Stored on the lead, it survives the whole cycle — including the sale that only closes ninety days later.

With that in place, four attribution models become possible over the same data:

  • First touch — who brought the person in
  • Last touch — what pushed the decision
  • Linear — every touchpoint splits the credit
  • Time decay — the most recent weighs more

None of them is correct. What is useful is switching lenses without switching the source of truth.

Feeding the algorithm is where the money is

Sending the conversion back to Meta and Google with the real value is the step most teams skip, and it is the one that moves media performance.

Without it, the algorithm optimizes for "people who start conversations" — and you get a pile of tire-kickers. With the real value, it starts hunting for the profile that buys, and buys big.

What to do with the answer

Correct attribution only pays off if it turns into a fast decision:

  • Creative with cost per sale above target: switch it off today, not at month end
  • Channel with volume but no closes: check the promise in the ad before blaming the sales team
  • Source that closes big and slow: widen the attribution window before declaring it broken

Attribution is not a report. It is the list of what to switch off tomorrow morning.
